Swine Flu update
Since returning to school the Ministry of Health has sent us the following reminders.
“The Ministry of Health encourages people to continue with their personal hygiene
regime: wash and dry hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes, stay away from
other people if you or they are sick, regularly clean flat surfaces”.
If we have a high absence rate (30% or more) we are to inform the region’s public health
unit. For this reason it is important we know why your child is absent. The Ministry of
Health also remind us to keep an eye on students and children with underlying health
conditions, such as asthma. We have had some very sick children. We ask you to be
very vigilant before deciding to send them to school.

No doubt you are all aware of the spreading swine flu and the possibility of this reaching our schools and pre-schools. As part of our planning for such an event we attached a contact list to this weeks Newsletter (12/06/09) for you to complete.
It is essential that we have updated emergency numbers for people connected with school families. Please fill this form out and return it to the school office as soon as possible. It is also necessary for all school families to ensure Kathie Davey has all current email addresses. You can contact Kathie on .
Teachers are also preparing “home packs” in case of emergency, and in the event of a school closure you will be provided with a list of websites for you to access for educational purposes. The Ministry of Health does send us regular updates on the situation. In their recent email to schools they continue to emphasise the primary measures of personal hygiene (regular handwashing etc) and parents keeping students home if they are sick with flu symptoms. The following is a quote from a Ministry of Health newsletter (2nd June 2009) regarding Swine Flu:
The Ministry of Health letter of 2 June suggested that children returning to New Zealand from affected areas overseas, but who are not showing symptoms of flu, should be kept at home for a week.
This was background information for families and not a directive.

Olympic Medalist visits our school!

Today we had the pleasure of having Olympic Bronze Medalist & three time World Champion  Mahe Drysdale visit our school.  He talked to us about his special achievements throughout his career, his ups & downs & how he has managed to come out on top.

Mahe started his career at the age of 18, decided he wanted to finish his studies, so put his rowing career on hold.  In 2000 Mahe watched Rob Waddell win Gold in the 2000 Olympics & this inspired him to return to rowing.  He has since won the World Champs three times in 2005, 2006 & 2007 single sculls as well as his bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Mahe was chosen to carry the flag for New Zealand during the Parade of Nations in the opening ceremony at the Beijing Olympics, this was also a very proud moment in his life.  Unfortunately a week before his medal race he became ill & was off form, but he still managed to do all New Zealand proud & bring home a Bronze Medal.

In 2006 Mahe won the supreme Halberg award, the University of Auckland Young Alumnus of the Year Award in 2007 and he was awarded Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rowing in the New Years Honours 2009.
